Al Mather

Al Mather

East Machias, Maine

Al has been turning since 2002 – with an emphasis on spindle work. The spindle roughing gouge and skew chisel are often his only tools of choice. Happily, his initial fear of the skew chisel was quickly replaced by an affinity for it; and he would be delighted to help you establish a similarly warm relationship with yours.

While he does turn some bowls; his primary focus is on household items such as rolling pins, a cookie / biscuit cutter of his own design, doorstops, hair sticks, mushrooms, ornaments and candleholders. His inside-out turnings are truly extraordinary. Should you visit him in his downeast shop these are the items that you’ll likely find him producing.

His classes have been very popular ever since they were first offered. So when they hit the schedule be sure to sign up soon as the vacancy will not last long.

Al is a member of the Maine Woodturners and the American Association of Woodturners.
